When Should You Book Senior Photos?
One of the most common questions I receive is: "When should I book my senior photos?" The answer depends on when you'd like your session to take place. Summer and fall are the most popular seasons for senior photos in Nebraska, so I recommend booking several months in advance whenever possible.
For Class of 2027 seniors, I am currently booking summer and fall sessions throughout Lincoln, Omaha, and surrounding Nebraska communities. If you're currently a sophomore and will be graduating in 2028, I recommend reaching out between January and March of your junior year to secure your preferred season and date.
For college graduates planning spring graduation photos, booking approximately two months in advance is usually ideal for March, April, and May sessions of your graduating year.
The earlier you book, the more flexibility you'll have with dates, locations, and seasonal scenery.
Why Timing Matters
One thing many people don't realize is that the time of day can completely change the look and feel of your photos. The most beautiful natural light typically happens shortly after sunrise and during the two hours before sunset—often called golden hour. During these times, the light is softer, warmer, and much more flattering than the harsh midday sun.
As your photographer, I'll help choose a session time that gives us the best possible lighting for your location and vision. Whether we're photographing downtown, in a field at sunset, or surrounded by fall colors, beautiful light is one of the biggest factors in creating images you'll love. You don't need to know anything about lighting—that's my job.
What Should You Wear?
If there's one thing I want every senior to remember, it's this: wear what makes you feel confident. The best outfits are the ones that make you feel comfortable, confident, and like yourself. If you feel good, it will show in your photos. You'll be walking, sitting, moving, laughing, and exploring during your session, so comfort matters just as much as style.
Don't Be Afraid of Color
Color brings personality and life to your photos. One of my favorite pieces of advice is simple, wear your favorite color. If you love it, chances are you'll feel confident wearing it. For sessions with lots of greenery and natural backgrounds, colors that photograph beautifully include pink, blue, yellow, and lavender. For fall sessions, consider colors like brown, burnt orange, deep red, cream or ivory. The most important thing isn't following a color guide—it's choosing colors that feel like you.
Urban or Nature? Which Style Fits You?
One of the most exciting parts of planning your session is choosing locations. Urban locations are perfect for seniors who love brick walls, cobblestone streets, murals, downtown architecture, coffee shop vibes or the top of a parking garage. Nature locations are perfect for seniors who love open fields, wildflowers, bridges, trees, and tall grasses.
The best part? You don't have to choose just one. Many seniors choose two locations so their gallery includes both urban and natural elements. This creates more variety and helps tell a fuller story.
Bring Something Meaningful
Some of my favorite senior photos include items that tell a story. Think about things that hold meaning in your life right now. Maybe that's your horse, family heirloom jewelry, your favorite cowgirl hat and boots, your grandpa’s vintage car or a sign for the school you'll be attending. There are no rules. Your senior session should feel personal and reflect who you are. If it's meaningful to you, let's find a way to incorporate it.
Hair & Makeup
One question I hear often is whether professional hair and makeup is necessary. The answer? Only if you want it. Some seniors love having professional hair and makeup done before their session. Others prefer doing their own routine. Both are wonderful options. My biggest advice is to choose whatever makes you feel your best. This experience isn't about looking like someone else. It's about celebrating who you already are.
What Happens During a Senior Session?
If you're nervous, you're not alone. Almost every senior tells me: "I'm awkward in front of the camera." And almost every senior leaves saying: "That was actually really fun." I'll guide you throughout the entire session with prompts, movement, and natural posing that feels comfortable and authentic. We'll laugh, explore, and create images that feel like you. Show up and be yourself. I'll take care of the rest.
Bring Extra Options
I always encourage seniors to bring extra outfits, shoes, accessories, and layers. Sometimes what looks great in your bedroom mirror feels different once we're at the location. Having options gives us flexibility and helps create more variety in your final gallery. To make outfit changes easy, I bring a portable changing tent and cart so you can comfortably switch outfits during your session, even if we're in the middle of a field, downtown Omaha, or exploring a new location.
And Please Know
You do not need perfect skin. You do not need to lose weight. You do not need modeling experience. You do not need to know how to pose. You simply need to show up as yourself. Senior year is about celebrating who you are, where you've been, and where you're headed next. Your photos should reflect that.
